The Genoa Bar and Saloon

The bar opened in 1853 as Livingston's Exchange, just two years after Genoa (originally Mormon Station) was founded as Nevada's first permanent settlement and 11 years before statehood. Frank Fettic bought it in 1884, ran it as a gentlemen's saloon called Fettic's Exchange until his death in 1933, and the bar rode out Prohibition posing as a soda fountain. It also survived the 1910 fire that destroyed much of Genoa. Claimed famous patrons include Mark Twain, Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, Clark Gable, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson, and its intact period interior has made it a filming location for movies including 'The Shootist,' 'Charley Varrick,' and 'Misery.'

Raquel Welch famously left her bra at the bar after a visit; celebrity bras became a house tradition, and hers remains the prize exhibit (displayed on a mounted deer head, per a 2026 profile).

What to order: The 'diamond dust' mirror behind the bar — a crushed-diamond-decorated Victorian mirror shipped from Scotland and hauled over the Sierra, one of only two survivors from Comstock Lode days.
