Since 1948

The Blue Front Cafe opened in 1948 under Carey and Mary Holmes, an African American couple from Bentonia, as a gathering spot for workers from the Yazoo County cotton fields, offering hot meals, groceries, drinks, entertainment, and even haircuts. In its heyday it was famed for buffalo fish, blues, and moonshine whiskey. The couple's son, Grammy-nominated bluesman Jimmy 'Duck' Holmes, took over in 1970 and has run it ever since as an informal, down-home blues venue with international fame. It is the acknowledged home of the 'Bentonia School' blues style passed down from Henry Stuckey and Skip James, and it carries an official Mississippi Blues Trail marker. Holmes also hosts the annual Bentonia Blues Festival, which continues in 2026.

Owner Jimmy 'Duck' Holmes, who has run the cafe since 1970, is a Grammy-nominated bluesman, and the juke joint has been featured in the documentary 'I Am the Blues' and a music video by The Black Keys.
